Mosaic is one of the oldest and the most durable painting techniques. Since prehistory until the present day, a man has been communicating with stone. The beauty of stone comes from its natural look and colour and from the uniqueness of each piece. It symbolizes endurance, strength and beauty that transcends centuries.
TESSERA ART - Mosaic Research and Production Centre is an artistic studio that promotes mosaic as a form of visual expression and a visual technique which, owing to its longevity, is essential in preserving the world cultural heritage.
We make different types of mosaic using both traditional and modern techniques. Mosaic as a visual technique opens up different avenues to the final solution. The selection of the technique, material and casting method is based on the conceptual design.
The making of a mosaic and the presentation of a conceptual design start with a sketch. A sketch can be simple or detailed depending on whether it shows an abstract pattern or a figurative composition.
The preparing of stone is more demanding than sketching. It entails breaking or cutting stone into small pieces, called tesserae. A tessera is a small piece that makes up the upper, visible layer of mosaic. The main raw materials we use to make tesserae include natural stone, smalti and ceramics. These can be combined within a mosaic composition whereas their selection depends on the mosaic type, conceptual design and space they are intended for.
